It is known that women, in the majority, do not like exercising with weights, and have a fear of this method of training, and that there is still prejudice about women and gyms and the main reason about this, in my opinion, is ignorance.
The training with weights has many positive effects in both men and women, and we will discuss about this below.
I would start with the question – why women don’t like to lift weights? Because they don’t want to be “too muscular”, of course. Here are a few “excuses” which I have heard these past few years, and I believe that there are many more.
If you recognize yourself in some of them, my intention is not to convince you that you’re doing it wrong, but to draw your attention to all the benefits of resistance training, of course, if you are healthy.
You may change your attitude, and therefore your training and appearance and way of life.
1.“I don’t want to be too muscular”
This is probably the main reason why girls do not go to the gym. The old prejudice that a girl will look like a bodybuilder if she increases the weight which she exercises with. Simply put, women do not have as much testosterone as men, and it is very, very difficult to gain muscle mass.
This requires years of effort, work and sacrifice, as well as high-protein diet. And if you get muscle mass, this is a huge plus for you – because the more muscle mass means a strained look, less body fat, more power, better appearance, faster metabolism – which is precisely what you want. Don’t worry, you will not get the look of a bodybuilder overnight.
2.“The gym is boring”
If you spend 3 hours a day in the gym, I would understand if you say that the gym is boring. And what if I told you that your resistance training should last no longer than 45 minutes?
If you do a good quality resistance training, you simply won’t have time to get bored in those 45 minutes. Completely devote to your workout for 45 minutes to an hour, be physically and mentally present. I guarantee you will not be bored.
3.“The gym is only for men”
The gym is the same for women as it is for men. We also have the muscle groups that need to be worked on, just like men, and we need strong muscles of the back, chest, shoulders, arms, stomach.
And the number of girls in the gym (which is always smaller than the number of men) is a result of lack of information and of course – prejudice.
4.“I just want to tighten up my body”
Excellent! In that case, I welcome you to the gym because there is no better way to do that. Countless repetitions with little weight will not help you to lift your butt, cut off your cellulite. Only a quality workout, with adequate nutrition, will help you tighten up your body – just the way you want it.
5.“I want to lose weight and not gain muscle mass”
If you want to lose weight, it does not mean that you only need to do cardio. Of course, it is important that you are healthy and that your doctor has confirmed that you can exercise.
If you want to lose weight, strength training is very welcome, and as we have already mentioned more muscle mass automatically means accelerating metabolism and lower percentage of body fat.
You spend more calories on a daily basis even when resting because muscle tissue is the most metabolically active tissue.
6.“The machines are complicated, I do not know how to use them”
No, the machines are very simple. What’s really important is that when you exercise in the gym for the first few times, you have a coach next to you to tell you how to properly exercise. It is very important that you have the right technique.
7.“I do not have the motivation to go to the gym alone”
Have a personal trainer or come to our site to get advice – we will help you with that. Set yourself a goal, for example for the next month or three months, and follow it.
There is no better motivation than the moment you begin to see the results on you. Workouts won’t be long, and as you grow stronger you will feel better in your body.
8.“I don’t need weights, I only do cardio and female exercises”
There are no female or male exercises. The gym is, as we have already said, both for women and for men. Cardio has its advantages, but do not exclude the weight training.
In addition to the many benefits we mentioned – faster metabolism, less fat, tighter appearance, psychological benefits – exercising with weights also affects injury prevention and stronger connective tissue.
